THE STUDIO
“…Much of the public’s identification with contemporary glass is caught up with its vision of the hot shop, with artists working with globs of molten glass variously manipulated to completion, often into a vessel shape. Kuhn, however, never works in that manner—his is an art of grinding, polishing and laminating, and then grinding, polishing and laminating, and then grinding, polishing and laminating some more. He does not blow glass or form it in a furnace, but brings his sculptures into being through a process of mathematical logic and control, using specially designed machinery to engineer his glass towards his ends. Coldworking yes, but never cold or without passion; through his relentless search for geometrical essence Kuhn touches a human concern and awe for symmetry and reason that is at the center of our being.” – James Yood (1952-2018)
